Where do you stand on the Sandwich Question?

(Via Facebook) After looking over my options, I… I think that I am actually a Structure Purist / Ingredient Purist.  This surprised me, because I happily eat subs, hot dogs, ice cream tacos, chicken wraps, and burritos*. But when it comes down to it, I just don’t think that they’re, you know, sandwiches.  I was not expecting this.

*I would categorize “ice cream between waffles” as being itself a classic sandwich arrangement, but I admit that that way lies redefinitional madness.

  1. If push comes to shove, I’m a “Structure Neutral / Ingredient Purist” kind of guy. The older I get, the more I enjoy subs more. However like you, I would eat any of those pictured food.

    1. My wife and I had an interesting digression on how to categorize breakfast sandwiches. I consider McMuffins to be sandwiches, she does not (we both think that McGriddles aren’t).

      1. They clearly fall in the “Structure Purist / Ingredient Rebel” alignment.

The real question that will bake your noddle, would be KFC’s Double Down (look it up if you need to refresh your memory) thing. Is it a sandwich? If so, what is the alignment?

        1. Most of KFC’s esoteric stuff is Rebel, in one form or another. In the DD’s case, it’s Structural Rebel, Ingredient Purist. Heck, it’s practically an inverted sandwich, but that’s getting needlessly theological.

Ahh, but the DD has two pieces of chicken, not a wrap. It would clearly fall under the “Structure Purist / Ingredient Purist” if we consider it a sandwich at all. However since it has no bread, it is clearly a snack.

  2. I am glad I had forgotten about this while grocery shopping today. I would have likely bought ice cream to try the waffle/ ice cream combo.

  3. I vacillate between the purist and neutral on both structure and ingredients. But, not at the same time. So, structure purist/ingredient neutral and structure neutral/ ingredient purist. But not neutral on both. So, I’d take up the three spots in the upper left side.

  4. Subs have bread. Subs have meat/veggie combination ingredients. Subs ARE sandwiches. I didn’t even think this was disputable.

Ok, I know, EVERYTHING is disputable.

  5. Structure neutral, ingredient rebel.

I’m going to go to the freezer and get a sandwich.

    1. Why not just have your woman get it for you? That’s her job, right? (I’m joking of course. Don’t ever take comments like that, from me, seriously.)

  6. True neutral. A taco isn’t a sandwich. Pretty sure wraps and burritos aren’t sandwiches, although as the thickness of the bread increases I’d be more inclined to call it a sandwich.

I’d call ice cream between two cookies a sandwich, so I don’t fit perfectly.

      1. For a chain, Jimmy John makes a fine BLT. I always order one on the side when I get a sandwich.

  7. Where does the open faced sandwich fall? Clearly a sandwich but need to eat with a fork and knife not with hands.
