Well, huge for a movie about the Miracle of Dunkirk. Rotten Tomatoes notes that the embargo on full reviews isn’t until July 14th (the movie comes out on the 21st), but the first reactions are coming in on Twitter, and apparently people are blown away. And, oh yeah: see it in IMAX 70mm. There’s also this reaction that intrigues me:

Obviously, I was going to see this movie. But if it’s going to be laconic, then I really want to see it. Trying to explain what happened at Dunkirk is possible, but it’s so much easier just to show it. I appreciate that the director is just giving you an idea.

PS: I have no idea what ‘divisive’ means, in this context. Hopefully, something like ‘unapologetic.’ Or, dare I hope, ‘patriotic?’ — Because that would be nice, even if it’s English-patriotic. I don’t mind vicarious patriotism.
If any nation in Europe has a reason to be Patriotic, its the British.
Evidently some corners of the interwebs are upset that pretty much all of the actors are white males. Because diversity trumps history or something similarly stupid.
That’s like the people that got upset over the new Murder on the Orient Express. The lack of Asians made some people very upset.
Geez, they were lucky to figure out how to get a black dude in there without breaking immersion.
Note: I don’t mind breaking immersion like that, if the actor’s good.
Saw some complaints on YouTube about a lack of French troops in the revealed footage to date (there were a lot of French troops caught in the pocket, along with the British, and most of them were evacuated as well – and then sent right back to France, where they stayed following the surrender).
And then someone pointed out that in one of the snippets at x minutes and xx seconds, you could see a French helmet.
