Why? Because what I read here correlated to what was going on in my personal life. To wit: cutting out sugar wasn’t really helping with the weight gain.
You’ve been watching your sugar intake lately, so you select a diet soft drink from the office pop machine for a cool, refreshing pick-me-up. It’s sugar-free and has no calories. About as harmless as water, right?
Not so, says a new study published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Nonnutritive sweeteners such as those used in diet pop were associated with weight gain, a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes and other health problems, according to researchers from the University of Manitoba’s George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation.
Now they tell me. I may just give up completely and drink water with lemon juice in it from now on. Surely that’s healthy for me, right?
…Don’t answer that.
Wegman’s flavored seltzers are quite excellent.
I started a low carbohydrate diet at the beginning of April. I cut out sugar, bread, pasta and potatoes and eat less than 50 grams of carbs per day. So far I’ve lost 53 pounds.
.
When I have a soda I drink a brand called Zevia that is sweetened with stevia, a natural 0 calorie sweetener. I don’t drink it often. I might buy 1 or 2 six packs a month.
.
If you’re looking for a diet soda without the artificial sweeteners it’s the only one I’ve found.

Problem with alot of these diet soda studies is the inability to link correlation with causation. Switching to diet soda but not changing any other behaviours like exercise and overall carb/calorie intake is not going to lead to weight loss. The gut flora argument in the article is interesting and requires further investigation, we don’t know enough about gut flora and and its role in health.
Heh.

I’ve avoided diets since cyclamates went away..
.
What I do is to drink coffee (with cream), water, and unsweetened iced tea most of the time .. and keep a small stash of mexican-import real sugar in-a-gorram-glass-bottle coca-cola in the back of the ‘fridge for meals that *require* it.
.
Pizza night needs a proper coke .. as do some movies. Most days, though .. water.

p.s. Mrs. Cat swears her joints feel better when she’s drinking lemon-water daily .. haven’t tried it myself.
I drink water with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar everyday. Both help my acid reflux.
