He was 89. Like most people my age, I grew up watching Robert Guillaume first on Soap, then on Benson, and then on Sports Night (both of which were excellent television). The man apparently had a pretty hard life, growing up and before he turned it around. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Used to watch Benson from time to time back in the day. I remember hearing the announcement that he was replacing Michael Crawford in “The Phantom of the Opera”. The first thought that popped into my head was, “The replacement is really going to be the guy from ‘Benson’?”
He was also Eli in Half-Life Two.
