I don’t know what the maximum crime is in this Wichita swatting homicide case.

[UPDATE: Apparently there’s an Asshole #3, who made the call on Asshole #1’s behalf. Constant Reader BigGator5 used the term ‘psychopath,’ which I feel fits.]

Short version: Asshole #1 threatened Asshole #2 over a Call of Duty situation. Asshole #2 gave Asshole #1 a fake address.  Asshole #1 called the cops and sent them to that address with a false report of a shooting and hostage situation (‘swatting’). Cops show up, shoot and kill the guy who answered the door. In my opinion, it is exceedingly unlikely that the guy who got shot by the cops did anything to deserve that, but I don’t have the actual details on just what caused the shooting.

Well, except for the details that Asshole #1 and Asshole #2 managed to somehow get somebody killed. They’re both culpable in this, too. Asshole #1 knew that people can get killed in swattings, but he lied to the cops anyway and sent them off.  Asshole #2 knew that people can get killed in swattings, but he clearly didn’t give a damn if somebody got shot, as long as it wasn’t him.  I don’t know what the two are going to get charged with, but it should be the maximum charge possible and the DA had better have a good reason for even contemplating a plea bargain.

No, I have no give in me on this. Friends of mine have been swatted. It’s a vicious thing to do, and more people need to go to jail for it.

PS: Yes, I don’t normally indulge in profanity.

PPS: No, I haven’t forgotten about what the police did here.

  1. Swatting is now a felony in most states. A death occurring in the commission of a felony is Murder 1 for Ah1. For Ah2 the best would be manslaughter but that will be a heavy lift.

  2. I’m hoping they’re sent to a nice minimum-security prison for a long, long time .. one that *doesn’t* have internet or games.

      1. I am not kinder, please don’t think that.
        .
Your way .. creates martyrs .. and is also a much lighter punishment, in terms of pain that must be endured.
        .
My way .. they get a future, but a decidedly unpleasant one .. and they get to think about their actions, how they destroyed their own future, and the future of the victim’s kids, for a long, long time.

Nope, not kinder than you at all.

p.s. unless you buy into the concept of hell .. if you buy suffering for all eternity, then yeah, you win.

  3. Holy Molly, did you get a couple of details wrong. Here, let me correct you:
    .
Asshole #1 threatened teammate Asshole #2 over a Call Of Duty bet of $1.50. Asshole #2 gave Asshole #1 a fake address. Cowardly Asshole #1 then gave the address to Asshole #3, a well known SWATTER. Asshole #3 called the cops and sent them to that address with a false report of a shooting and hostage situation (‘SWATTING’), then CALIMED INNOCENCE OF THE MATTER!
    .
Asshole #3 gave an interview, exposing him as the unrepentant psychopath that he is.

      1. Couldn’t finish the interview, by the way. Not the interviewer’s fault and it was good that he did it, but yeah, there was some psychopathy there.

  4. Heard about this. What a mess. I feel sorry for the family. Hopefully everyone involved gets the maximum on this.

What’s unusual, and fortunate in this instance, is that there’s a clear trail of who arranged the whole thing. Most of the time even though the victim usually has a pretty good idea of who called the cops, there’s no way to prove it. But the messaging trail here might actually be enough to convince a jury.

    1. This *should be* a wake-up call to police to put down the testosterone-poisoned “warrior cop” ethos (along with the disgraceful defacement of the U.S. flag into a “blue flag” – since when do cops sport the equivalent of a gang sign?)…
      .
Showing up at a house and checking out the situation is noticeably distinct from showing up, guns blazin’..
      .
All due respect to the Law & Order types .. we are not an occupied nation, our police should not be acting as an occupying force.
