It’s an abstract, surreal setting. It works because of how earnestly the story is told, and how straight the author played all the weirdness going on around the characters.

The casting and costumes kind of screamed that they were going in a different direction.
I can think of some straight men who would have been excellent. Mindy Kaeling and Zack Unspellable are not amongst them.
It’s a good thing the “submit” button outlasted the keyboard when the power went out. We tend to lose power if someone sneezes too hard, but this time our power stayed the whole time.
I think one of the problems in Hollywood is Hubris. The people who make movies maintain a rock-solid belief that any ideas they have are instantly better and more compelling than the source material. It’s even worse when the person making the movie is the one who created the source material (I’m talking to you, George Lucas.)
