Trying to decide how I feel about this Aladdin trailer.
Most of the live-action Disney flicks I am, frankly, meh about. My exceptions are Mulan and Aladdin; Mulan because you can make a very good live-action film out of it with only a little in the way of CGI shrine dragonage; and Aladdin because I will be absolutely fascinated to see who has the self-regard to put his feet in Robin Williams’ sandals. I’m not saying it can’t be done; I’m just saying I can’t begin to think who can do it.
I guess we’ll see!
I have a list:
The Rock
Kevin Hart
The Rock and Kevin Hart
Dave Chapelle
Kevin Kline
Jim Carrey
Ellen DeGeneres
Billy Crystal
Don’t worry…nobody listens to me.
Of that list, I think Billy Crystal is the only one I would trust to even come close.
The stage shows have traditionally gone with a Black man, kinda like the atypical trope-breaker they needed with Jason Momoa as Aquaman.
.
Accordingly, IMDB has him cast as… Will Smith? This should at the very least be Interesting.
Internet Movie Database says Will Smith is the Genie.

No genie, no Jasmine, no Jafar… there’s a lot missing from this trailer. Doesn’t seem like a good sign.
Will Smith is talented and likable, but I wouldn’t want to be the person to try filling the shoes of Robin Williams. For Williams, the script was just a jumping-off point. I think Will Smith will need some talented writers, and even then it will far short of Willams’ genius.
But Will Smith will put butts in the seats, at least on opening weekend. Did they at least get Gilbert Gottfried to play Iago?
Guy Ritchie directing? Now THAT is interesting. That means maybe we’ll get Mark Strong, Jason Statham, and maybe Ray Winstone? Aladin as an English caper film. This actually has promise.
That’s .. hewing somewhat closer to the source material, no?

I need to watch again in a dark room. My office with bright lights made it hard to see.
