  1. Something’s wrong with your metric, Mr. Lane.
    .
By that metric .. Coldplay is likewise not without artistic merit, and I simply cannot conceive of that being correct.

  3. Something can have artistic merit and still be detestable.
    .
“Corporate” bands thrown together by a record label zek to target an identified niche is a horrible, cynical concept.
But Boston is still iconic, and deserves to be.

Backstreet Boys had some catchy songs chosen for them, and they sang well enough. The objection was mostly about the posing and marketing. With side issues of being obnoxiously vapid, and “can you really be called a band when not a damned one of you can play an instrument”?
I hated the Backstreet Boys because of what they stood for. Dancing being more important than musicianship. Physical attractiveness being more important than musical talent. And teenage girls driving the market.
I don’t blame the individuals of the group for doing what they were hired to do and cashing the checks! It’s a good gig.

    1. It just dawned on me that the same people who grew up idolizing Backstreet Boys are now probably the same tasteless couch potatoes that keep “reality” TV going.
