The Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Trailer.

Well.

I dunno. Am I the target audience for this, even? I have yet to be ZOMG I MUST GO SEE THE LIVE-ACTION VERSION for any of these movies, which suggests that maybe I’m not the target audience. I’m iffy on the actors playing both Aladdin and Jafar: the former looked a bit low-affect, and the latter — well, judging from that section of the Internet that’s into dudes*, apparently Marwan Kenzari is FAR too attractive for the role.

As for Will Smith? To quote somebody or other: I am not whelmed, whether over, under, or just whelmed. I can see where it can go bad. I can also see where it can go well, but that mostly involves Will doing a deep dive into his past: Nineties nostalgia might be the only thing that can save him now.

Or not. I dunno. Somthing’s bugging me about this one. Even more than the usual ‘live action version of a perfectly good animated movie.’ Although I have some hopes for Mulan, mostly because I’m curious to see what Disney does with a straight-up war movie.

    1. I think it’s because the Blue Man Group never speaks, and therefore can’t express their displeasure that someone is appropriating their skin color.

  1. 1. Using CGI in a “live action” movie is cheating, the contestant is hereby disqualified.

    2. Creating a remake of a movie that very much revolved around the unique talents of Robin Williams seems doomed from conception.

    3. I am definitely not the target audience for this movie, so my opinions on it probably don’t matter one whit.

  2. Unfortunately, Disney seems to be doubling down on the live action remakes. The trailer for Dumbo also came out this week. And there’s a rumor about a live action “Nightmare Before Christmas” floating around now. Because that will end well. That’s on top of the already released or upcoming Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Jungle Book, Christopher Robin and Lion King films, and I’m probably missing some there. A quick Google search shows 17 live action remakes in the pipeline, although some are things like Maleficent 2 which aren’t quite remakes.

  3. Jafar should be oily, but menacing. He should look like a guy who wears a hood- even when not wearing one.
    .
    The Jasmin looks good.
    .
All of that aside, Will Smith should have never taken this role. No one should have taken this role. It cannot be taken.
