The ‘Yesterday’ trailer.

You know, I’d watch more non-genre films if they would just make more non-genre films that sounded interesting.

Case in point. The conceit of Yesterday is simple: the lead of the flick wakes up one morning to discover that he’s the only one who remembers the Beatles, including the music and lyrics. Hijinks ensue. …That sounds like something that I’d watch.

And then probably throw things at the screen at, because if you erase the Beatles from history then the last six decades become utterly unrecognizable in terms of popular culture and that probably won’t get properly addressed, but that’s not the point. The point is, it would be different. It might have something to say. Or, at least, something to say to me.

Ach, well, it could be worse. We could be going through the Great Movie Drought of 2003 to 2007. God, those were hard years for the non-genre crowd.

  1. Oooooooo. Let’s see, without looking at IMDB to verify release dates, I’ve got Underworld and I think Fellowship from that time period.

    1. Right on Underworld (2003), but only right for Return of the King (2003.)

Anyone else feel a bit old?

  2. It would be different closer to the point of divergence, but not necessarily different NOW.
The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin overwhelmed the genre with a mutated Blues, getting a massive assist by The Who going in a much different direction than previous artists.
You can spin your radio dial all day long without hearing anything reminiscent of The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Elvis Pressly, etc. (And if you happen to come across something, it’s most likely being labeled as “Country”.) So long as the British Invasion happened, there’s lots of room to play.
