The Sonic the Hedgehog trailer.

So OK.

Sonic looks weird and Jim Carrey… OK, Jim Carrey looks like a young Dr. Robotnik. Which I only know because my kid went through a Sonic phase. I dunno if he’s down with the new version, though. That Sonic looks a little weird to him, too.

    1. I kind of feel like it’s riffing itself. I’d love to see the Honest Trailer guys rip into it, but they wait until the movie is out.

  1. Jim Carrey may just save this movie, if such a thing is possible.

It IS a movie based off a video game, so let’s be honest: None of us had great expectations going in.

  2. I hope CinemaSins get ahold of this one.

Jim Carrey must have really needed money. (Apparently his career as a painter isn’t bringing in the necessary funds.) Neal McDonough I understand, because his choice of roles is limited by his refusal to do certain types of scenes.

Those two are just doing their jobs. The guy doing the CG on Sonic, however, just mailed it in.

    1. I dunno .. it looks like the CGI isn’t .. merely bad.
      .
I’m reading it as a mix of this Sonic being into the “uncanny valley”, and some really bad “this is how we make a blue hedgehog look”.
      .
Because .. that looks almost nothing like a hedgehog ..

      1. In fairness, Sonic doesn’t really look like a hedgehog. The “blue guy with spikey hair” look is pretty much how he’s always looked.

On another note, I dub the trailer the winner of the honorary “most gratuitous reference to a video game console in a trailer this year” award for slipping in the word “genesis”.

        1. Eh, the early versions didn’t anthropomorphize nearly as badly .. yeah, far longer legs than an actual hedgehog, but
          .
And yeah, also caught the ‘genesis’ nod. Wondering if they’ll mention “dreamcast” anywhere …

        2. The Sonic in the trailer looks like a poorly rendered CG anthropomorphic animal. I’ve seen better graphics in free aps on my tablet. They might as well have just put in the tennis ball the actors were looking at when they said their lines.

I can’t think of a single good reason to make a movie based on that game. Not one.

          1. Hollywood has no new ideas.
            .
Hollywood has never really had new ideas, most of what they’ve done was done in other media first.
            .
They’ve finally got a handle on comic books .. and are now trying to figure out video games.
