We’re almost done with this story! Like, almost a week before I need it! There is something terribly wrong going somewhere! I just know it!
“…do we have to solve them up close and personal?” said Mike aloud a couple of hours later.
Beside him, Nita frowned. “What was that, Cap’n?” Her eyes never left off watching Jimmy ride his horse towards the mudnado/Hellfair. Then again, neither did Mike’s.
“Don’t worry about it, Corporal,” he said. “Just talking to myself.” And wishing that I hadn’t said that Jimmy could have the next one. Being a Ranger Captain was a lot more fun when you had to lead from the front anyway.
But it made sense. Jimmy was the best rider, and he’d need to be if he wanted to get away in time. Nita was there because she was the strongest one in the troop: if they had to drag Jimmy back, she might even be able to bring along the horse. And Mike was the one ordering people to go do damfool plans like this. You could usually get away with doing the damfool plans yourself in the Ansteorra Rangers, but sometimes you couldn’t — and this was sometimes.
But of course, now that they had a damfool plan there was no sign of the damned monster it was supposed to be destroying. Mike couldn’t even hear it.
