Sofie did not wake me up with her knocking, knocking on my office door, but only because I was up already. I figured she would walk back into my life just after sunrise, and I had her arrival time pegged to within twenty minutes. I like it when shenanigans — I wasn’t going to call this a Case yet — are that predictable.
I even had a pot of coffee going, because I’m classy like that. “Morning, Sofie,” I said as I opened the door. “Apology, explanation, or cryptic warning?”
She looked at me, blinking. “You can’t tell me you have a patter for this!”
“All right,” I replied, and gave enough of a pause for her to notice. “But I do have coffee. You want a cup, first? It’s early out.”
