There are two things that you will need to understand about MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN (you can find it on HBOMax*):
- It is anime. I mean, it is really anime. There’s absolutely nothing salacious or disturbing in it, at least so far: but the characters and tropes both draw heavily from the genre.
- The three main characters are all in their early twenties. Superman in particular is still learning his suite of powers; he’s by no means incompetent, but this is the part of his story where he gains experience. The show is also not wasting time on setting up the romance. Lois and Clark have been mutually crushing on each other from the start, instead of the usual trope where she focuses her romantic inclinations on Superman first.
…I heartily recommend this series. There’s nothing grim or dark about how they’re portraying Superman at all; he’s got that Reeves/Routh** cheerful, slightly hokey optimism that people like to pretend they’re too cool to find attractive. The character dynamics are good, and everybody involved seems to be having a good time. My major complaint is my usual one: we don’t get this for the soundtrack. On the other hand, we never do. On the gripping hand… it’d work for this show. It well and truly would.

PS: To reiterate: MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN is very unapologetically anime. If Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon annoys you, you may have a stylistic problem with the show.
*I find the new name silly, and if they want me to use it, they can pay me for the privilege.
**I feel that not making a sequel to SUPERMAN RETURNS was a fairly drastic mistake on the studio’s part.
From what I’ve seen the anime is of secondary quality. I’d rather watch the good stuff, but no judgement if you feel differently.
