Tweet of the Day, One Additional Reason I Won’t Use AI Art edition.

I’m no cheapskate. If I want to use somebody’s art, I’ll pay for it like a gentleman. There are projects I don’t do precisely because I can’t pay for them, and I think the writers who are drinking from this particular poisoned chalice are going to end up regretting it. There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

  1. Have there been a significant number of soulless recitations?
Have any of them reached greater notability than what already existed on fansites?

Cartooning is a skill of writing at least as much as it is drawing. Take the first few years of The Far Side or Schlock Mercenary as examples. The art was quite bad. But they were huge successes.

You cannot copyright a style. Others imitating your style has always been an annoyance of artists, but is intrinsic to being a successful artist. Copying the artstyle would gain you the experience of seeing how others did it. Having a computer program automate the task won’t even give you that.
The entire concept of harm here is so notional as to be laughable.

Seriously, contemplate how hard it would be to have one of these programs consistently create the same characters in the same scale for an ongoing comic. Because I’m coming up with flatly impossible. You could use them to quickly iterate a character *concept*, but beyond that…
