Keywords: Mary, Queen of Scots, deciphered letters.

Via Facebook (which insists on scrambling front pages upon refreshing, so now I can’t find where) comes this fascinating story from 2023 on how they managed to decrypt correspondence between Mary, Queen of Scots and the French ambassador to England. …So, yeah, obviously there’s going to be a binary separation, here. If you’re into codes/ciphers and/or Elizabethan-era history, you’ve probably already clicked through. If you’re not, that’s cool, but you may not want to take a look at the article, because it’s full of stuff about ciphers and Scottish-English politics. The original (and linked) paper, even more so.

Seriously, I’m not judging. This is some fairly recondite, narrow-interest stuff, and I don’t expect everybody to be into it. I’m just weird that way, that’s all.
