There is a certain bitter irony in the fact that I far more trust a Japanese anime studio to do a better job of making a proper Anne of Green Gables show than I do a Western live-action one. If this is what we’ll be getting, it’ll be delightful. And since this site’s Web Dude has indicated that Anne is Big In Japan, it probably will be what we’ll be getting, at that.
Still: trust, but verify.
Back in 1976, Nippon Anime adopts an Italian children novel “Heart” into a 52 episode series 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. It’s dubbed version is VERY popular worldwide. They’ve done many of other works such as A Dog of Flanders, Anne of Green Gables (1979 version), Tom Sawyers etc.
I would trust Studio Ghibli to do Anne of Green Gables justice. Honestly, I would pre-order the DVD before production began. It being a fairly simple story in a peaceful place helps people who desire peace and simplicity find joy in it. It is too bad that Hollywood seems to be full of people who hate peace and despise simplicity. It is why they cannot adapt Tolkien anymore.
