Although I’m not a ‘torture the players’ type. I strive for a madcap style, particularly when I’m running a con game. I want people laughing and trying to one-up each other with how gonzo they’re getting, not desperately clawing for one more +1 to stave off their demise for a few more rounds. NTTAWWTOC.

I made life hard for the players. I figured the more peril they were in, the bigger the triumph when they overcame it. They seemed to like it.
Bad take.
Man vs. Fate is more common than at least two of those listed.
My general take on it, is that the peril must arise organically from the character’s actions.
There’s no pathos if the player doesn’t see their doom coming, and know it’s a consequence of their own actions. (Character creation totally counts for this. If you take Enemy or Secret disads, they’re totally fair game.)
