Greg Stafford was one of the towering giants of the roleplaying game community: founder of Chaosium, writer of Glorantha, Pendragon, Ghostbusters, the Prince Valiant game… nobody ever called him a Great Old One because it would have been far too cute-ironic, but it fit. He was one of those people who defined RPGs from the start, and 70 is far too young for him to pass from us. My condolences and prayers for him and his loved ones.

Wait — Ghostbusters?
(checks copy of the game that’s sitting on the shelf). Whoa. I recognize the other names in the designer’s credits, too. Now I’m curious how a number of Chaosium folks wound up writing a game for West End Games. Granted, back in the 80’s I didn’t really pay attention to much of the industry outside of GDW, and I embarrassingly didn’t discover Chaosium titles until the later 90s.
RIP, Mr. Stafford, and thank you for your contributions to the gaming community.
I had the Hawkmoon RPG way back in the ancient times. Brings back some memories. (Mostly my friends making fun of me for saying I would like to get some Moorcock.)
Rest in peace, Mr. Stafford.
It’s been more than forty years since I first wrote Greg Stafford about the fictional world he had created for his White Bear/Red Moon board game. I’ve lost track of how many hours of fun his games have brought me, my friends and my family.
Fare you well, Old Shaman.
