The cat just walked up this afternoon, did the Love And Pet Me thing that cats do, and hung around to be fed and watered. Now she’s making plaintive meowing noises from the basement, because we put her down there with a food bowl, water bowl, litter box, and blanket to lie upon. I assume that in the next day or so we’ll be over the vet to check for a chip — this cat is absolutely not feral — and fleas and whatnot.
I’ve seen this happen to my wife and her family for decades, and it never ceases to amaze me how they just acquire pets out of nowhere. It’s blipping uncanny. And it’s apparently happening again.

PS: My wife still wants to get another cat to keep this one company, assuming that this cat isn’t simply lost and has a family looking for her. I’m personally inclined to just wait for the universe to assign us another cat. At this rate, one will be popping in some time around the weekend.
Oddly, I had this dream night before last that myself and my girlfriend were staying on about the 10th floor of this really nice hotel, and she goes out onto the balcony only to find an orange tomcat out there, who was very happy to come inside, and very very happy to have humans to be around, particularly her since she found him. The odd thing was that there was no obvious way, in fact no easy way at all that the cat could have made it onto the balcony. So my dream self suggested that we name the cat Acrobat.
I remember somebody posting on Twitter about how a cat appeared at his window… which was four or five stories above the ground, and had no easy way to be accessed. Dude might not have been thrilled at the way that Twitter collectively responded Welp, guess you have a cat now.
That’s .. how this works, yes.
