Is this something people want?
Universal Pictures has hired Call Me by Your Name and Suspira filmmaker Luca Guadagnino to direct their remake of Scarface, which has been in and out of development for years.
The story has already been adapted a number of times, but the most recent version was the 1983 classic starring Al Pacino. The new film will be a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. This story will be set in Los Angeles and will focus on a Mexican immigrant.
I mean, yes, the 1983 SCARFACE will be forty years old in 2023. That’s actually not an unreasonable amount of time before you have a remake. But is it really warranted? I don’t think that the Eighties aren’t all that alien to modern eyes. Or are they, and I’m just old?
..ish.
Ah, but at this point the studios can better identify with Tony Montana’s complex inner journey.
