  1. I couldn’t find anything that confirmed whether it’s true or not; googling for ‘alive and practicing law’ turned it up in several lists of legal humor.

    1. I’m guessing this is from “Disorder in the Court” by Charles Sevilla (1999). The whole book is filled with such exchanges.

  2. The guild protects its own.
    Had this exchange occurred, the judge would have hit the witness with contempt of court, and the prosecutor would have charged him with perjury.
