Okay, so when it comes to biology: ‘This, I know, from nothing.’ But the people who do seem to know something about bio are all standing around blinking and going “…Dude,” so I’m going to assume that there’s something here. Even if it doesn’t pan out the way the aforementioned gibberers are assuming.

Oh yes. There was a campaign several years back to crowdsource-compute the modeling of this very thing, not unlike Bitcoin mining, but For Science™. Not because there wasn’t funding, but because the computing requirements were *that massive*.
I’m not surprised that Google stepped in to the “Massive Computing” shoes at all.
