Sure it could be terrifying, but I also recall (purely anecdotally for legal purposes) stories about people in a more carefree world not so many years ago who came into possession of a roll of ‘asbestos warning’ stickers, and proceeded to have a (to them) grand time placing said warnings on unused basement doors in various shitty institutions (and at least a few bathroom storage closets in assorted fast food joints).
Those of a litigious bent might call it ‘malicious mischief’.
If I were young and stupid and unsupervised in a lab, who knows how I might mislabel a pint of gin, before promptly forgetting about it when I got fired for other indiscretions.
Dear Lord, I hope so.
It’s hard to remember but.. not all that long ago, things in academic labs were.. rather far more wild west than they really should have been…
… and some Carter era grad students could have gotten up to mischief that wasn’t noticed until…. Now?

I’m disturbed that a few of the early vectors of the covid freak-out started talking about smallpox during the week before this discovery.
I’m not saying the conspiracy theorists are right.
I’m just noting that their predictions have been uncomfortably accurate for (starts counting fingers, runs out, starts counting toes, runs out) years. But especially so during the last 12.
