…and it’s one reason why I think GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE worked better than either of the other two sequels/reboots. The first and fourth movie in that series both recognized that their heroes were in an old-school Lovecraftian cosmos — and by ‘old-school’ I mean ‘the heroes can actually win*.’ The fourth flick could have been funnier, but at least it was thematically congruent with the first.

*I have nothing against today’s nihilist neo-Lovecraftian cosmic horror oeuvre. In fact, I read it all the time. But the old stuff did allow for more satisfying tactical victories.

The whole point is that humanity is doomed, but the threats aren’t hostile (except for *maybe* Nyarlathotep).
Humanity is so insignificant that indifference is even a stretch, as that implies we were at least noticed.
So *of course* the heroes can win and stave off annihilation for another day. Mayflies can live longer by simply never getting the attention of the trout, but “longer” is highly relative.
