06/22/2023 Snippet, ALKALI JONES AND THE LOST DEVIL-CITY.

Back to this!

Jim took a look around. “The vines are pretty thin, here in the city. Gonna be easier than we thought to get a landing strip up. You can still see where the streets used to be, we can go along those. Unless whatever you’re looking for is in one of these mounds?”

“Watch your feet on that.” I got up from where I was poking at the ground cover. The vines (tightly interwoven, and bristling with thorns) really were thin, here: I could pull up entire sheets of them with only a little effort. The dark hole I revealed wasn’t entirely good news, though. “There’s probably sinkholes scattered all over the place here. I don’t think the vines will hold our weights.”

“Yes, yes, this part of the Yucatan is littered with underground caves. We knew this already.” Okay, Bigwave had a point there: we did. “Most of the old city has been sucked down into the dark by now. We’ll find so many things down there, snug and safe from the prying eyes of above.” Ah, he’s one of those, I thought. Some people can get pretty worked up about these old ruins, especially if there’s magic involved. It’s usually harmless, as long as you can give them something shiny to play with.
