I am a Republican, and one that is much less hard-nosed on the subject of immigration than Mickey Kaus is. We’re going to have the conversation about what to do next, and if Mickey wants to join in then he needs to join up.

PS: Fair warning: Charles Krauthammer’s plan (which I can sum up as “Let us close the border, and you can have your green cards”) works for me on a basic level; it’s a plan and it can be implemented. And there’s a lot more people in the GOP that will get behind it than Mickey thinks that there are. Some of them are even Tea Partiers.
Close the border, wait 20 years, we will not have a single illegal under 18 years old. Most of the variations on ‘border first’ seem workable, both politically and pragmatically, to me.
.
Oh, and any illegal (or legal) caught comitting a felony gets to serve his or her sentence, then gets a boat trip to Ciudad Hidalgo….

That will not happen.
Oh, I know. What’s going to happen is Boehner & Co. will capitulate on darn near everything except a tax rate hike… because they think only a tax rate hike will get them fired in 2014.

Won’t happen. Can’t happen. Dems won’t let it happen. There is ZERO incentive on their side for any action other than complete capitulation on ours. They figure they can just let the border stay porous and wait for us to either give up or be eventually replaced. The status quo works for them.
Remember, Mexicans and Americans died due to the direct policies of this administration and they got reelected anyway with record latino support.
I wasn’t planning to ask the Left’s permission. I was planning to figure out how to get our Republican Congress to pass a law outlining that deal, then look over to the Senate and say “Your turn.” 🙂 Let them sweat this sh*t for a change.
Sweat what? They’d just laugh at it, call the Repulicans racists and demand amnesty. They think they don’t need white voters anymore (an open question, but I don’t think they’re that far from right)
They’d have the question back in the R’s lap in minutes.
The House was more or less proactive on every issue we thought mattered since 2010, and the Senate sat on all of them and paid 0 price for it.
Aruges: I have a plan. I’m sorry that you don’t like it.
I’m sorry I don’t like it either. I’m sorry about a lot of things lately.
