Hi, Democrats. Be afraid.

Via The Morning Jolt, via The Washington Examiner: Marco Rubio’s turning the water thing into a schtick, which is exactly what you do to make third-party jokes about it seem… lame.

Be very, very afraid.  Because it’s not just Rubio.  We’re prepping a whole bunch of people this go-round who can actually play the game.

  1. This is known as “Pulling A Shatner”. If you realize that you’re headed for satire territory and head it off by means of self-satirizing, it deflates most (if not all) subsequent attempts at satirization.

Palin, e.g., attempted this too late by going on SNL. She may have mitigated the damage had she done so earlier.

  2. During the 2016 campaign, it should show Marco Rubio holding and then drinking from a water bottle. I can see it now:
    .
    (Commerical)
    .
[Marco Rubio comes on with a big smile and reaches for a water-bottle]
    .
    Rubio: I’m Marco Rubio…
    .
    [drinks from bottle]
    .
Rubio: And I approve this message.

  3. Ok, I got up this morning and read a bit of the “water” thing. So I expected to find out that he’d spilled water on the floor, or himself, or something like that.

I then find out that … he took a drink of water.

Is this really all the Democrats have left?

    1. No, it’s also the deer-in-the-headlights look in his eyes. I’m convinced they’re nattering on about drymouth + stage fright + water.

This is terrifying. The media is staffed entirely by drama critics from a high school paper.

      1. The water thing is brilliant. If it was really an accident, then it’s an incredibly lucky one for Rubio.

Most people (a simple majority at least, although I suspect more) don’t like public speaking.
        .
Oh, they can do it, they get up and give a departmental presentation imagining everyone in their skivvies, but .. it’s not their forte.
        .
They didn’t go out for the high school play, or the speech team, or student government; they did their time and gave the few speeches required, and moved on.
        .
They’d be much more – subconsciously – able to identify with a visibly nervous Rubio, eh?

        1. if he were a DemonRAT, I would agree, he would gain ten points overnight. But since he is a Republican, it is a major scandal, hell, he might be recalled.

    2. this is as arbitrary as attacking his suit, his haircut, or the way his mouth opens and closes when he speaks. The media, and a constantly growing percentage of Americans are willing to assault any Republican for anything. The media and the professional left needs to destroy Rubio before he gets traction with the low information voters, if not water drinking, it would be something else.
