Democrats still not quite grokking that #shutdown is a tool for the GOP.

The rebels ultimately hope to push Democrats to accept some sort of compromise that delays or in some way limits Obamacare. But if they fail — and Democrats have remained rock-solid on Obamacare to this point — they envision a situation in which, for as long as the shutdown goes on, they are able to fund popular government programs while leaving some key Democrat-friendly outposts shuttered. For example, while they want to fund the Pentagon, are the Republican rebels OK with the fact that most of the Environmental Protection Agency is shut down? They are. Are they worried about furloughs at the National Labor Relations Board? Not particularly.

This is much more fun if it’s a surprise.

PS: Seriously, someone did consider the possibility that the GOP would not exactly be weeping over the idea of demonstrating just how much of the federal government can be sent home in case of an alien invasion or something?  I swear to God, I should be a consultant.

            We’re in this mess, in part, because the GOP under Bush 2.0 “got greedy” and didn’t even try to fix health insurance.

            It was damned obvious, under Clinton, that we needed to do something .. we had the numbers .. why didn’t we do it under Bush 2.0?

          2. Bush did. Medicare Part D. And deliberately provided Congress with inaccurate information while pushing it through.
            All in the name of a permanent 51% majority.

          3. I will credit W one thing: Medicare Part D was the first entitlement probably in the history of government to come in under budget.

  3. The House gave up a while back on efforts to defund the ACA. Now they are just talking about a delay in the individual mandate to match the business delay (which even Jon Stewart seems to think makes sense).

    I’d rather see the ACA enforced to the letter of the law. Nothing like vigorous and impartial enforcement to demonstrate the folly of a bad law. Besides, the left won’t shut up about it until it is a smoking ruin at their feet.

      Yes, the house passed a CR or two and a budget that funded Obamacare .. but they each required the Senate – specifically, the blue-dyed rats masquerading as blue dogs – to vote *for* the tax increase.

      You’ll notice that, rather than put the rats on record, Reid has just buried the budget and has spiked the CRs.

      This isn’t about Obamacare, except as far as it’s about the politics of the tax increase that’s needed to pay for it.
