I gotta ask: who the Hell watches these Purge movies?

They’re on their third one by now; and I get that they’re ridiculously successful. But as near as I can tell the underlying premise is simultaneously highly offensive, and even more highly absurd. Who, exactly watches it?

I am ready to accept that there’s something of value about these films that I’m just not seeing.  Not everybody likes the stuff that I like, after all. But I have difficulty getting my head around the appeal.

  1. The premise is pure prog-tard nightmare, so it’s only value (in my eyes) is seeing what the other side really thinks of you.

    1. Or fears about itself.

I’ve noted many times that gun control efforts aren’t aimed at those of us out in the sticks. (If nothing else, the logistics make it impossible.) They’re aimed at the urban underclass and suburban middle class.

      1. Ponder Asimov’s observation – “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent”.
        .
The left-progs *reject* violence as a solution (despite advocating for growing government – which is itself simply violence or the threat thereof)..
        .
This leaves left-progs with these .. urges .. that they *cannot* admit to .. and also *cannot* get rid of .. modern chemistry isn’t that good…
        .
So .. they do what any incompetent does .. they make up fairytale stories .. and they guess about how this “violence” thing works ..
        .
I’ll take Walking Dead over Purge any day .. they at least have a *concept* of how societies work and what societal breakdown looks like ..

  2. Everything I learned about the Purge movies I learned from Rick and Morty

    .

That and the fact that as a genre, various kinds of murder porn have been popular going back at least to the 70s.

  3. They must be very cheap to make.

The premise of the movies always struck me as being so retarded it lifts the veil off of using that word.

You have a free 24 hours to kill people you don’t like. Have Fun!
Yeah – like that isn’t going to cause any awkwardness over the rest of the year:
    .
“Hey Bill, can I borrow your snow-blower – really sorry about your wife but hey – the Purge and she had it coming.”
    .
    .
    “Kill! Kill! Kill!”
    *ring*
“Oh darn – I can’t kill you now – I got to wait until next year. See you then.”

I like stupid movies, but I hate movies that demand that I become stupid. And vicious. And everything as a person that I am not, just to accept the premise.

      1. Sorry – won’t use it again.

I try to stay in bounds and be a good guest.

Your house, your rules and I try to abide by them.

  4. Weird. I just had a comment about how stupid the entire premise was go *poof*.

“Hey Dave, can I borrow your snow-blower – sorry about your wife and the mother of your three children, but it was The Purge and you know she had it coming.”

Yeah, no blood-feuds ever arise out of stuff like that. Look, I can enjoy stupid movies, I can’t stand to be insulted to my face.

    1. And in saying how I don’t want to be insulted to my face I insult our mutual host by violating ground rules.
      .
I am sorry, that was wrong of me.

Now I have to go and find some egg remover.

      1. Actually, no, I didn’t really object to it in that context. I think that it’s a legacy filter from the days before account registration: I seem to dimly remember some dweeb that liked to use it as a swear term despite the fact that nobody would ever see the comment, so I eventually set it to auto-trash.

        1. I’m always reminded of this bit when the discussion comes up: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hSp8IyaKCs0

It doesn’t matter of my oldest daughter is classified as an imbecile, severely r-tard-d, or having Pervasive Developmental Delay: Autism. The underlying condition Does Not Change, even when you’re using language to try and avoid facing the reality. (Which I find much more offensive than a squeaker trying to provoke a reaction.)

          1. I think people liked the term ‘child of the mind’ or something with flowers at some point. I hated that term.

Not everyone is intelligent and educated enough for the vocabulary of the virtue fetishists.

  5. Oh, the stupidities.

    1. Unemployment is heavily driven by leftist economic policy. Mentally ill homeless and thievin’ druggies do not seek gainful employment, and should not be counted in unemployment numbers. Also, one percent unemployment? Did they even talk to an economist?
    .
    2. Yeah, a lot of the same people commit crimes. Especially a lot of violent crimes are clustered in certain areas. Yeah, maybe the crime profiteers(lawyers) have corrupted the process for their own collective benefit, and the detriment of the general good. Vigilantism is not a magical cure all.
    .
    3. Murder a bunch of unsightly people, fix a social ill, is essentially eugenics. As it proposes changing the state of man, eugenics is not really conservative in America. Part of how eugenics fails is that one cannot predict the future of a man on the sort of scale that would matter to a society. (Convicted murderers are one person, and not the same as killing all future murderers.)
    .
    4. The variations in crime rate between American groups suggest enforcement consistent with low crime areas might eventually drop high crime rates to that level. This is more likely to be tried than the stupid murder plan. It is likely that people would succeed in reducing crime by this method before resorting to the dumber than a box of bowling balls murder plan.
    .
    5. Let’s consider the logistics. There are 2 million people incarcerated. If police and the law are sufficiently inefficient, there are substantially more habitual criminals. Which probably means the scale of murders in the backstory is millions or tens of millions. That is mass murder, and who, besides maybe Bernie, is dumb enough to think that would only happen to ‘bad people’? I hate the druggies as much as anyone, but getting rid of them that way would do a lot of damage to the economy, and to American society. There is reason to think it would more than offset any supposed gains.
    .
    6. The gimmick supposes that the only variable controlling massive internal slaughter in the United States is Federal Law. I think the controlling factor is the desire of the armed American population. I think that the end of the range wars et cetera was caused by Americans no longer making that choice for fear of other ordinary Americans now in driving range. I think if the American people wanted it, they would get slaughter, regardless of federal law or restrictions on tools.
    .
    7. This Purge thing is a damned and false analogy to the second amendment, isn’t it? It would have been in time to take advantage of the Martin mania that eventually was developed into #BlackLivesMatter. Which implies the answer to your question is racists and stupid gun control fanatics.
