Dungeon crawls can be dangerous, but in the end, D&D is a fantasy of power. Always give the characters fair warning and a reasonable chance to overcome that which you put in front of them.

If you want to run a fantasy of powerlessness, there are other systems and genres where doing so is actually appreciated. Starting with Call of Cthuhlu and Delta Green.
