I know that it might sound weird, but stuff like that does make me want to see the movie more. A King Kong flick set in the Vietnam era? It actually kind of works really well as a quasi-horror setting. You got the guns, you got the cars, you got the planes; but what you don’t have is an ubiquitous communications grid that allows you to call for help, the authorities, and/or airstrikes at the drop of a hat. Those people are going to be out on the sharp end on their own for most of the film, and shots like that establish the situation quite neatly.
That is darn good use of imagery. It seems to be a lost art these days.
Remember those Star Destroyer shots in TFA, though?
Granted, but also remember that this is reinforcing the theme of any King Kong movie: “Damn, that is a big gorilla!”
