Topic for discussion: what would a RATIONAL Power Glove look like?

I mean, we all know what the Nintendo Power Glove looks like, but let’s face it: there’s a reason why it went away.  To wit: its ergonomics absolutely suck.  I can’t think of a glove/wrist technological artifact that really looks practical, either. And yet you’d think that there’d be one, no?

Anyway, I can’t turn this thought into a seed, so I’m going to turn it into a discussion, instead.  Assuming it gets discussed, of course: I may be the only person who cares.  Which is fine. I often wonder about weird things.

  1. Well, the irrational one would look like the one worn by the hero in The Dungeonmaster:

    A rational one, as a data entry device, if you’re actually using a fingered glove, would respond to typing movements, or maybe piano type movements- you can wiggle your fingers quite quickly and accurately, with practice.

    If you’re going for Rule of Cool, I like both the arm wavy movements to control vehicles in Earth: Final Conflict, and the arm-mounted living weapon thingees.

    1. A truly rational one? Bluetooth (or functional equivalent) connected, finger position *and pressure* sensing, paired with a pair of eyeglasses or contacts.

      Display a virtual keyboard *or other input device* and permit manipulation thereof via the gloves.

  4. Guys, I am shocked. SHOCKED I say! On this Blog?

    1) Omni-tool from Mass Effect series.

    2) The Pip-Boy from the Fallout series. Essentially the original wrist mounted vacuum tube driven Biometric/GPS/PDA. Probably not rational given the tech of the game (although they are always fuzzy on where the tech really was. A lot of it is vacuum tube based, but at the same time, they have functional, practical, hand held laser weapons. I remember reading somewhere that one of the biggest divergences in the Fallout world from our own- aside from the much more accelerated use and development of nuclear power- was that they did not develop the transistor until MUCH later, hence the difference and reliance on the tubes.) With modern tech, this would probably work much better, but I would think it would still be heavy.

    1. I am honestly not impressed with either the Omni-tool or the Pip-Boy. And I curse the day that I failed to pick up the latter while the cost was merely absurd.

      1. Yeah, I had one chance to get the special edition for 4. I saw it for sale on amazon, at work, on my phone. I waited until I got home to look for it on my pc and it was sold out. Never could catch it when it was available.
