Interesting clip here from the new Hellboy.

I got to admit, I like the aesthetic in this Hellboy clip.

They’re not proper gambesons, of course. Proper gambesons are torn, restitched, stained, and faded. Nobody’s ever fixed a broken fastening on one of those with duct tape, or smeared paint on a pauldron so as to let everybody know who was who. And that armor! Not a scuff mark or dent to be seen. Note that I waited until this long to mention the apparent lack of smell (nothing smells quite like medieval body armor that’s been fought in all day in the middle of summer), because it’s a movie and everybody in that scene probably wouldn’t be able to smell it anyway at this point. But the smell would still be there.

Nevertheless, the aesthetic appeals. At least they’re not wearing ridiculous plate mail. Just stuff that you can move in and not rattle too much. I like that touch. Far too often Hollywood has this weird view of how knights operated and fought. All about what looks good on the big screen, I guess.

The new Hellboy trailer is trying *really* hard.

I don’t mean that to be snide. I think that Hellboy‘s people understand that this is a potentially fraught project, and that this isn’t twenty years ago. The comic book nerds ain’t gonna be fine with just seeing the IP appear in any old form. The state of play is at a higher now.
