If you hear somebody crying, do something. Something non-electronic.

I read this story by Bethany Mandel about that entire sad (in many senses of the term) episode where somebody live-tweeted somebody else’s long distance breakup, and I think that we should take away from it is… a question.  You see somebody in obvious and intense emotional distress. You can either: help that person ease that distress; or record that person’s distress for other people’s perusal. Which is more important to you?

I swear to God, I think that I’ve written about this before. Not this specific story, but something close to it.  …I think.

#rsrh Let me tell you what the debate should be about tonight.

More accurately, let me let Clubber Lang tell you what the debate should be about tonight.

Seriously, if there isn’t blood on the walls and at least one ear on the ground by the end of it then we all truly did waste the last six months of our lives. I want to see Darwinian, red-in-tooth-and-claw savagery in the debate tonight… and here’s something that Mitt Romney should consider: the only way that he lives through this is to be the most savage one of all. The days of ducking under the podium are over.

And, hell, if Romney starts channeling his inner Batman it’d actually be a bit reassuring at this point; so, no downside.

The Right’s response will be given by a Mr. C. Lang.

While in the process of laughing hysterically at the sight of the Obama administration using as their Snark Czar – excuse me, “Interim White House Communications Director” – someone who spent 2007 criticizing a much milder government/press adversarial relationship* than the one she’s planning to prosecute now, one of my colleagues wondered privately what this strategy of directly going after critics is going to mean for the White House when they go after the Right.

I can sum it up in one word. More accurately, Clubber Lang can:

Only this is the real world, not the movies. The administration isn’t going to have the scriptwriter on their side for this one.

*The open contempt that this administration shows towards the press is… interesting.  Of course, so far the White House has gotten away with it.

So far.
