As was noted in comments here last night, David Vitter is retiring: “Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) announced Saturday night that he will not run for reelection after losing Louisiana’s gubernatorial runoff election.” …well. Guess we saw, huh?

(Via The Business Insider) No question mark on this: Marc Armbinder’s first mention has been expanded upon here, and CBS News is now reporting it as well. This should surprise nobody: we’ve been expecting this announcement since Wednesday. Particularly since the Tea Party folks are going to – justifiably – claim at least the assist on this scalp*.
So… Stupak betrays the pro-life movement and his district, then quits rather than face the wrath of either. And don’t weep for him: he’ll segue right into the comfortable life of a DC lobbyist, which means that he’ll probably get a pay raise and will certainly enjoy the remainder of his term, free from the nagging terror beginning to fill the lives of his Democratic colleagues. Because you cannot trust a ‘conservative’ Democrat.

Doing so will save us the trouble of removing you from office in November. Which we will. This is a bad year to be a Democratic incumbent in a Republican district.
In an emotional talk with other Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee this week, North Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy said the protracted debate is hurting him so badly back home that he might as well retire if it drags on much longer.

PS: Of course there’s a GOP candidate running for his seat. Kevin Cramer, chairman of North Dakota’s Public Service Commission. More fallout from Senator Dorgan cutting and running – although ‘fallout’ may have too many negative connotations, here. At least, negative from the GOP’s point of view…
