Rare JRR Tolkien speech recording to be released later this year.

Got sent this via email: there’s a tape from 1958 of JRR Tolkien talking about the Lord of the Rings to a… dinner party.

:pause:

Heh.

Anyway, they’re remastering the tape and will release it later this year.  Here’s a preview:

Cool.

PS: Do not expect it to be free.

  1. Well, it won’t be free for the first few saps who shell out for it. It will be free for everyone else on the net a half an hour later.

    1. Yep. The question is how successful will the copyright authorities be in clamping down on the unauthorized releases.

  2. Amen on the postscript.
I squawked in indignation when I saw the price of the Beowulf translation. (Yes, I still bought it on day 1. I plead fanboy.)

That said, I have no interest in this. After reading him for all these years, I have a very distinct idea as to what Tolkien *should* sound like, and I have no interest in letting reality intrude.

  3. I have heard the following quote attributed to both C S Lewis and Hugo Dyson on the occasion of Tolkien reading excepts of The LOTR to fellow Oxford dons: “Oh no, not another f&cking elf.”
