And David Jolly (R) pretty much now a lock on winning FL-13 in November.

Normally you don’t want to say things like that; but in this particular case… it’s not that the Democrats had been reduced to supporting non-party candidate Ed Jany after Alex Sink abruptly indicated that she wouldn’t run again in that district. You can sometimes work around a problem like that, assuming that you have the right candidate. No, what makes this a bridge too far is that the Democrats don’t even have that candidate anymore:

More details on that here. Suffice it to say that the DCCC has pretty much defecated in the blankets on this one; it’s one thing to make bricks without straw, and quite another to make them without actual clay. One wonders if the DCCC is even going to keep trying on this one…

  1. It is not just the DCCC. Florida Democrats (FDP) completely dropped the ball on this election. They knew as well as anyone else that anyone can run for any congressional district, just as long as you live in the same state, and yet failed to recruit that one person. Then they moved to back Ed Jany, only to get more egg on their collective faces. Their front-runner candidate for governor used to be a Republican. And they are not doing too well on the legislative level. Out of 16 RPOF Senators up for re-election, only ONE has a major FDP opponent. The FDP is a lock to flip two, maybe three, Florida House seats, but the RPOF is favored to flip SIX seats. If things turn sour for the FDP even more, the RPOF may get a veto-proof Florida Legislative, making the governor race meaningless.
    .
All of this dispite the fact that there are more register Democrats in the state. The FDP is in bad shape. If they lose this election, they will just burn down and sink into the swamp.

  2. It’s too late now to get on the ballot but if only the Democrats could have found a strong black candidate willing to run for the seat. I mean even a persona non grata would be better than running no one.

  3. Two points:
    1) Of course they’ll try again. They’re delusional.
    B) This is money they’ll be able to spend elsewhere. Not the best justification, but real nonetheless.
