Finally got around to starting ‘Elementary.’

The pilot was pretty good. Jonny Lee Miller makes for a believably neurotic Holmes; and, of course, nobody is allowed to say anything bad on this website about Lucy Liu, ever*. I am not the hardcore Holmesian that many people are, but I do like the characters and the books; and I enjoyed the way that the two interact with each other. Hopefully the rest of Elementary: Season 1 will be as good.  Because, you know, I’ve already bought it and everything.

PS: I’m not going to block anybody for not liking Lucy Liu, per se. But I will be slightly disappointed in your lack of taste.

*One of the myriad tragedies stemming from the fact that Hollywood has inexplicably decided not to option out Island in the Sea of Time is that Lucy Liu will never get to play the part of Dr. Alice Hong.

  1. Ah, excellent series. A very bleak, dire take on the characters, and yes, Liu is quite good.

  2. You *really* think Hollywood would option a book where the good guys end up building civilization based on self reliance, self-defence and good old-fashioned work, and the greens and peacenicks are a bunch of dipsh*ts that get themselves killed by the natives?

  3. I’ve been watching the current season periodically on the cbs website. I haven’t really watched any of it before, but seems like a pretty decent series

    1. I like the show because Holmes is constantly dealing with his drug addiction. Talk to any sober addict and they will tell you that the struggle never ends.

  4. Someone should ask Stirling if he wrote Alice Hong with Lucy Liu in mind.

(Authors do this sort of thing all the time. For example, Philip Pullman wrote Northern Lights with Nicole Kidman as the model for Marisa Coulter.)

  5. Mr L,

I have overlooked previous lapses in deportment, but the presumption of dissing the lovely and gracious Ms Liu is almost more than I can bear. Taking a period of time to get your mind right is in order.

    1. I make no apologies. Obviously everyone here is safe; but my stuff sometimes gets pirated by outsiders. I don’t like it, but I can’t pretend that it doesn’t happen.

  6. Yeah, but Stirling LOOOOOOVES him some badass lesbians (and STRAIGHT badass women); that plus his fascination with powerful, beautiful people (no matter how evil) would kind of fit in to Hollywood leftism. You’d think that would be worth at LEAST an HBO movie treatment.

  7. I like the series and I like Lucy Liu.

Now, will someone please tell me where to find the full HTML codex for WordPress? All the code I know is for bold and italics. I have never been able to make a link embed here…

  8. oh, I never even thought anyone would make Island in the Sea of Time so why am I suddenly bereft that they aren’t????? It could have been so good. On the other hand, look what Hollywood has done badly. Maybe it should just remain in the Wishful Dreaming World.

  9. I wouldn’t want to see her as Hong. Too evil. Id like her to play a more affably evil character. And, as much as I like the Island books, id rather see the ring of fire (1632 series) on TV.

    1. Impossible. Hollywood would hate Eric Flint on sight, or possibly spite: he’s a hardcore Lefty that genuinely loves America as it is, right now. The heretic is always despised more than the heathen.

  10. The delightful Ms. Liu was easily the hotest woman in Kill Bill, which says it all. Plus, the white kimono in the snow katana fight was erotic as all get out. Think I’m going to have to watch it again.

  11. There seems to be a certain type of person out there who thinks that because Elementary isn’t Sherlock, it can’t be good. Those people are wrong.

    1. Agreed. Elementary is a quintessential American show, which isn’t a bad thing. This just means that Elementary can’t race at break-neck speed every episode, like Sherlock can. I enjoy both shows for what they are and what they offer.
