Bottom line: It Did Not Suck. Also… :JJ Abrams waves his fingers: There were no Episodes I through III. Mind you, there was also virtually none of the Extended Universe that all the true Star Wars fans* know, and I don’t know how much of the former counter-balances the latter for hardcore fans. For myself, I had an excellent time, and there was a bunch of stuff in that movie that I didn’t anticipate at all. So… good job with not giving spoilers, Internet!

PS: Hell yeah you should go see this flick. As I said on Twitter:
The Force Awakens is what you get when Star Wars is directed by somebody who doesn't hate and resent the franchise.

*Look, I’m a nerd and a geek and a SF fan. I’ve watched the movies and played a bunch of the video games. But I don’t pretend to be steeped in the Knowledge the way that some people are.
I don’t think it’s so much that Lucas hated or resented the franchise. It’s just a) he mostly saw it as a tool for selling toys, and b) pretty much had no clue what it was grown ups liked about the first three movies.
I’ll dissent somewhat.
.
The characters were great. The set pieces were great. Great F/X. But I was slightly disappointed by the movie as a whole. No spoiling, but there’s a moment midway in the film where I went from “Wow. This is going great” to “Really?”
.
I don’t think it sucked, but I had enough reservations with the film as a whole that I can’t call it great. And that’s a shame.
Im having mixed emotions in the light of day. There were a number of things i did not like about it. And, most telling for me, no strong desire to see it again any time soon.
All of this is true. But it doesn’t redeem Star Trek: Into Suckness.
I have to say it was odd seeing a Star Wars film that was not preceded by the Fox fanfare…
