Star Wars: The Force Awakens gets an… appropriate number of Oscar nominations, probably.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens netted five technical Academy Award nominations but missed out on acting nominations and Best Picture. And, can I be honest? …That’s not unfair.  TFA is a popcorn movie.  A good popcorn movie that made up for the failure of the second trilogy of Star Wars films, but it’s not High Art and I don’t mind terribly that the Academy doesn’t see it the way that they saw the Lord of the Rings trilogy*.

John Williams probably has a lock for Best Original Score, though. Because, you know, John Williams.

*I pretty much think that Return of the King‘s sweep represents the Academy’s tacit decision to wait until the whole thing was out and THEN make it rain for Peter Jackson.

  1. That’s actually my biggest complaint with Oscar. Popcorn movies get short shrift, why can a movie be good and enjoyable? Why are most nominees every year boring and/or pretentious?
I like Bill Murray but I will watch Ghostbusters or Caddy Shack every time over Lost in Translation again. I will watch Behind Enemy Lines with Owen Wilson before I watch Sideways again. Give me Batman over Birdman.

The arts have always patted themselves on their back for what is considered “high-brow” and looked down on what the average person enjoys. History will be the judge and Disney will roll around in the huge piles of money they made.

    1. I totes agree with your summation…what is it with these awful, depressing movies? The only movie on the list that I might watch is “The Big Short” as I enjoyed the book (in spite of itself), but I’ll wait for a free Prime release.

“Lost in Translation” was a waste of Murray’s copious talent and such a bore that it almost put me off one of my fav chick flicks, “Marie Antoinette”.

What really ticks me off is that Lady Gaga is probably a lock for the song gong which the media asshats will seize upon to legitimize their false rape narrative.

I’m glad The Martian made the list. It’s nice to see a movie that make you proud of what humans are and what they can do.

  2. I agree on your analysis of the LOTR awards. I happen to think The Two Towers was better than The Return of the King, but I they wanted to only have to give him Best Picture once.

    1. Personally I thought the Return of the King was the weakest of the three movies by a fair margin, although I’d give the edge to Fellowship over Two Towers. But since they hadn’t given Best Picture out on the better movies…

  3. If they hadn’t given any of the major awards to any of the LotR movies, a million geeks would have never taken the process seriously ever again, and rightly so.

Ian McKellen still deserved Best Supporting Actor as Gandalf, though.
