It’s not bad – in fact, it was pretty good – but there’s just something about it that I can’t put my finger on. Not so much off, as different. And I don’t even know if it’s bad-different. Anybody with any thoughts on this, or should I just watch a couple more episodes and it will all make sense suddenly?

It actually gets better. Much like Daredevil, it spends a few episodes introducing characters and developing the arc of the season. I will say that it finished fairly strong during the last few episodes. My suggestion would be to keep watching.
I haven’t finished it yet, but I will say: the actress playing JJ does a really good job of playing someone who wants everyone to hate her. Also, David Tenant as a villain is weird, particularly since he uses the same accent as he used for the Tenth Doctor.

Also, Carrie-Ann Moss’ character is… off. Not sure how to put a finger on it.
Jessica Jones is not a superhero show. It is a drama with desperate people who just so happen to have super-powers and is set in the MCU.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with that and I still like the show. You just have to go into it knowing that no one is clean going-in or going-out.
That might be it! Somebody also mentioned on Twitter that there’s a undercurrent of sadism going through, which I saw once it was pointed out to me.
Killgrave is an interesting character at root. Jessica constantly makes decisions that would have horror film-goers standing in their seats screaming “NO DON’T GO IN THERE DON’T DO THAT IT’S ALL GOING TO END POO… WHY DID YOU GO IN THERE I TOLD YOU NOT TO GO NOW EVERYTHING’S RUINED!”
Nope, no sadism. That is consenting partners willingly engaging in aspects of pain or humiliation for sexual pleasure.
.
What Killgrave does is straight up rape, both mentally and physically. He will also do non-sexual stuff to you, just because he can. Killgrave is the ultimate spoiled brat since no one can say “no” to him.
I think it feels like sadism not on the part of Kilgrave, but on the part of the writers.
50 Shades of Marvel Universe?

My wife and I watched this (we try to keep up on all the MCU stuff) and found that the show, while continuing to be very engaging and interesting, just became increasingly unpleasant to watch. I described my reaction of it to her as such: “Its as though the writers sat down, watched Game of Thrones, and decided ‘that show is too upbeat. The world needs something darker and more depressing.'”
Without getting too spoilery, I just want to say that the show’s non-insubstantial body count could easily have been avoided. If only they didn’t hold off on introducing the Punisher until the upcoming season of Daredevil.
What I figured out is that it’s not a superhero hero show like the chirpy Supergirl. It’s a show about a rape survivor, that happens to have super powers. There’s going to be some really, really, damaged behavior coming up in subsequent episodes that makes complete sense if you know anybody who’s come out of a sexual assault/f’d up relationship.
I’d say to watch episode 2 and 3 as well. By the end of the third episode, you’ll have a good idea of the tone of the rest of the series and can determine if you want to continue.
