I thought it appropriate that I ran across this shortly after the Sunday morning book thread over at Ace’s. Some of the recommendations looked right up my alley. Right until I clicked over to Amazon and saw the prices. If Hatchett and MacMillan think I’m going to pay that much for e-books from new authors I’d never even heard of prior to today, they’re smoking crack. (A secret society of truckers descended from the Templars, dedicated to keeping the roads safe for travelers and warding off supernatural threats? You have my attention. You want me to pay fifteen bucks for the privilege of reading it? You no longer have my attention.)

It would work as a half-page prologue to Jerry Pournelle’s Janissaries, but I don’t think he’s looking for one.
Yeah, that’s a gimmick that may have outworn its welcome. Ach, well, that’s why they call it ‘experimenting.’ 🙂
I got a distinct David Drake vibe from this one. (Though I think David Drake’s novels transported Roman Legionnaires, if I remember correctly.)
The book was called “Ranks of Bronze”.
