It’s either baking tomorrow, or toilet repair.

It all depends on whether it’s sufficiently easy for me to pop out the top of the flushing mechanism and replace it with a new one.  Old one had the bar that connects to the chain rot clean off.  Which is hardly the worst thing that can happen with a malfunctioning toilet – my goodness, yes – but I suspect that this may end up being an exercise in frustration, tomorrow morning.

What makes it particularly annoying is that there’s a seed-cake recipe I found that sounds pretty dang good. But I need to do shopping for it, because I don’t have cake flour or possibly even double-acting baking powder. but if I’m instead in the Lowes’ all morning, looking for the right toilet repair kit…

And that’s why it’s been a slow night.  But, hey, four days until Christmas.

  1. More of a Home Depot cat.

From the description, you lost the flush handle bar (the handle outside the tank lifts the lever inside, which pulls the chain which lifts the flapper…) which is a $10 part unless you have a really weird toilet. Take what’s left of the old one out and take it to the store with you, if you have an oddball depth or something, makes it easier to not get home with the wrong part.

That said, I’d tie a length of dental floss to the chain, attach it to a spare wine cork as a handle, make the seed cake, and fix the toilet on the 26th.

  2. A salute to a cat. This has been handled.
Take the part with you and look confused while you ask the attendant for it’s replacement, and they should be very helpful.
Note that these toilet handles often tighten backwards (lefty-tighty, righty-loosey), is all I’ll add.

    1. It was the flush handle bar, and fortunately replacing it was about ten minutes’ worth of work. The seed cake is in the oven as we speak: I will do the dishes… in a little bit. 🙂

      1. Excellent news.

So .. have you started training the younger Lanes to do the dishes? Or .. at least, the Lane style of loading the dishwasher? (because every family seems to have its’ own style ..)
