A really great book…still holds up after a half a century
Doesn’t S.M. Stirling do a bit of an Easter Egg w/ the Weapons Shop of one of the townsfolk in the 3rd or 4th in his Emberverse series?

Also, if you can find the sequel, The Empire Of Isher, it’s worth reading. Not as great as the original short story, but decent brain candy. It ties together several apparently unrelated van Vogt short stories into a coherent novel, and does it rather well.
