Ka-Ching

This particular style of divination requires a jar full of coins, a magic marker, and one of those automatic coin counter gadgets.  You know, the kind that takes your change and gives you a credit slip for the supermarket, or Amazon?  Yeah, one of those.

It’s pretty simple to do — if you’re a magician who can cast divinations, that is.  You start by thinking of the question that you want to have answered.  Then you pick out four coins and write ‘N’ on each of them (for no), four coins and write ‘Y’ (for Yes), two coins and write ‘G’ (Good), and two and write (‘B’). Then you dump them back in with the rest of the coins, shake the jar around a bit, and then dump the jar into the gadget.

Wait until it processes, then check the rejected coin hopper.  The marked coins that show up represent your divination: compare the number of Ys to Ns, and Gs to Bs, to get your answer.  If all of the coins show up in the hopper, well, you need to ask that question again, only make it a bit simpler.

It’s a pretty limited form of divination, to be sure; and while any magic user using Ka-Ching can tell that something’s going on it’s hard to tell how much of something is going on.  But this technique has one major advantage: it’s amazingly quiet. If you’re not the one casting the divination, you’re never going to ‘hear’ it. Sometimes that’s really, really important.
