‘Wild Thing.’

…Are we just pretending not to notice that this is the same melody as Funky Cold Medina?  I mean, I don’t mind.  Man’s gotta earn a living, after all.

Wild Thing, Tone-Loc

  1. Dennis Miller had a similar comment when Vanilla Ice visited SNL. The Weekend Update theme that Miller used (which was from a Rolling Stones tune, iirc) had the exact same beat as “Ice Ice Baby”.

    1. It was “Under Pressure” from Queen. I believe Ice lost that particular lawsuit, by the way.

  2. I’m not pretending not to notice. They’re more or less novelty songs, and the novelty is long since worn off, so….

  3. 1980s pedant here. This came out in 1988 before Funky Cold Medina in 1989, so if anything FCM is the same melody as this.

But personally I don’t hear them as the same melody. Extremely similar in tone, sound and rhythm. I agree that Tone-Loc had a formula and did as much as possible to recreate his earlier hit. But the melody of one is based on samples of different songs than the other. Which makes neither particularly original melody-wise, but not the same either.

  4. From Weird Al Yankovic’s parody, _Isle Thing_:

Mrs. Hal had it goin’ on
    But Mr. Hal was meaner
Ginger and Mary Anne could’ve used
    Some funky cold medina
