  1. One down-nod in particular means something *very specific*, in my experience. It says “I acknowledge that you are a potential threat. I assert that I am also a potential threat. I see no reason that we should be in conflict at this time” with the implication that if the other person agrees, this is a solid basis for further negotiations, should such be appropriate or necessary, as any serious conflict is likely to be more harmful than beneficial for both sides.

    I suppose that I have also interacted with other down-nods that indicate other versions of respect – everything from “that was actually quite impressive” to “I’d bow, but I need my body for other things right now, so I’m using my neck instead.” where it borrows everything else from bow code (implications of depth/duration/etc) directly.
