The ‘Altered Carbon’ trailer.

This actually doesn’t look half bad: cyberpunk, hypertech future, guy hiring a detective to solve his own murder. I could see myself getting into it. Has anybody read the original Altered Carbon? Was it any good?

Also: is that the guy who did the voice-over narration for the Mass Effect 3 trailers?  Probably not.

  1. I read the original Altered Carbon a few years ago and found it… kinda meh, never really engaged with the story, and the ideas didn’t seem really new (John Varley was writing about recording people’s minds and putting them in different bodies back in the 1970s).

IDK, I don’t remember actively hating it, and enough people seem to really like it that I might give it another chance some day.

    1. Also, as I recall, the book was pretty much all from the POV of the detective, so either the trailer is misleading (making it seem like the rich guy will be the protagonist), or else the series will be really different from the book.

  2. I’m pretty sure I read it.
I evidently found the book “forgettable”. The title sticks with me much more than any details about the characters, setting, or plot. On the bright side, I didn’t actively dislike it.

Of course,I was kind of meh about “Ready Player One”, so my mileage obviously varies. (Don’t get me wrong,I would have preferred an ’80s without Michael Jackson and Madonna!)

  3. I read it a couple years ago, and it’s legitimately one of the best SF books I’ve ever read. Bladerunner-esque noir detective fiction with a solid dose of transhumanist SF.
