The ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ trailer.

I will grant that Jumanji: The Next Level seems to have hit upon an interesting way to switch things up.

…but I’ve just never wanted to see any of the movies in this series, for some reason. I mean, if one was on I’d finally sit down and watch it. But Jumanji as a concept doesn’t move the needle for me. And it’s not even the series’ fault; you’d think that I’d make time to watch any of them. I just haven’t, that’s all.

Good trailer, though.

  1. First Jumanji, with Robin Williams, was good. Good enough to shoehorn The Rock sequel into a video game paradigm instead of a board game – and was much better than I expected. An inventive re-imagining of the original concept and not a strict sequel, although they were careful to exposit a link to the original early in the movie.

This looks to mix it up a bit with the Devito and Glover “old men” characters. The trailer points to a fair bit of sequelitis though – bigger and more of the “first” (second) movie.

    1. Which is not a bad thing! The 2017 movie was actually funny. I’m definitely penciling this one in.

The first Jumanji was partially filmed in my wife’s hometown–I recognize one or two buildings.

  2. I enjoyed the heck out of the 2017 “sequel”, and I was wondering how they’d do a followup. It still looks fun, but I think the “old guy” shtick is going to run out of steam pretty quickly. 2017 had four characters with quirks, this is basically 2 and a half.
I’ll probably see the new one, but my expectation level has been lowered a bit.
